Peeling Paint and Poor Brushes

I focused mostly on the building and sky this time...still sizing up the grasses while defining them a bit more...and of course, I'm overworking the sky, but I'll fix that ugly ridge above the roof later. I think I want to add some white cloud there, anyway (if I'm going to overwork it, I may as well go all the way!)

And here's a picture of why it took me a few days to get back on track! Poor brushes! I gave them quite a workout. For reference sake, these are size 0 and 5/0 brushes--the old beside the new. What you're looking at is about the top 3/4" of the brushes. Kind of hard to paint good grass without a sharp point...

  1. You make me want to start painting again.

I like the hint of storm clouds rolling in. (For real this time.) Looking good.

    1. I'm glad you could tell those were storm clouds rolling in, Charlie.
...and over the years, I've found that for me, much of painting comes down to the wanting to. Without that, we don't pick up the paint brush...from there, surprising things can happen! :)

    2. I have several canvas's, tons of oil and acrylic paint, (old) brushes, desire, and I have the time. But I currently live in a tiny condo owned by two cats. When I know I have the weekend to myself, I'm gonna lock the cats out and go for it.

  2. Looking back over the three blogs you've posted on this painting, I'm struck by the way you add dimension to the subject matter... the depth of shadows developed so skillfully. This is so intriguing. Looking forward to the next installment.

    1. Thanks, Sharon. The beginning develops relatively quick. From here on out, it's a little slow going. It's not that painting the grasses takes a long time, but my eyes will only let me work on it for so long before they tire. And I wear ridiculous-looking goggles for magnifying, which really mess with my focus!

  3. I see brush strokes in the grassy area...which I figure are going to play out as grass blades. The sky looks cool too -- just a hint of threat.

Yeah, you pretty much tired out those old brushes. I can see why you insisted on new tools to continue.

    1. At this point, I'm trying to decide just how detailed to get with single grass blades--you know, I do have a tendency to overwork it...New brushes make it sooooo tempting!

    2. I figure go to where the muse takes you. If you enjoy detailing itsy bitsy grass blades -- well, do what you enjoy.

    3. ...I think I'll work on the boat for a bit today. Maybe then I'll know what to do, grass-wise...
